13COURSE

MBBS in Hungary Duration and Syllabus

MBBS programme in Hungary is officially called the Doctor of Medicine (MD) in General Medicine. MBBS in Hungary lasts 5+1 years. The syllabus combines basic sciences, pre-clinical subjects and hands-on clinical rotation/training. The early years emphasise Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry. The later years focus on Medicine, Pharmacology, Pathology and Surgery. The final or last year is for clinical training/internship.

For NMC eligibility requirements, the foreign MBBS programme must include at least 54 months of education, and the students need to complete the programme within 10 years of joining. Also, the internship/clinical rotation should be completed at the same foreign medical school.

Course length varies by university, and it determines whether your degree satisfies the 54-month rule.

Medium of Teaching

Most top Hungarian medical schools offer their MBBS (MD-General Medicine) programme in English, which is why Indian and international students don't face any language barrier while studying the programme.

But students are advised to learn basic Hungarian during their programme, because it will help them communicate with the patients during their last year of clinical rotation.

What this means for you: Language actually affects your learning, not your document. Your degree is valid in all cases, but it will help you decide how much you have learnt in the 6-year MBBS programme offered by a Hungarian medical school, which matters most, especially when you appear for the FMGE or upcoming NExT exam in India.

Curriculum Highlights

The MBBS curriculum in Hungary covers the basic sciences, pre-clinical, clinical, surgery and hands-on practical training, as well as supervised clinical exposure in University-affiliated hospitals.

15AFTER GRADUATION

Career Pathways After MBBS in Hungary

Completing the 6-year MBBS programme from one of the medical schools in Hungary is not the final step to practice as a licentiate doctor in India. Because you are a foreign medical graduate, you must meet the rules set by the NMC for licensing and registration, including the FMGE/NExT and a supervised internship in India.

  1. Complete an MBBS programme in Hungary, clarifying the programme meets NMC requirements and duration.
  2. Complete the mandatory 1-year internship at the foreign medical school where you did your MBBS, as specified under the FMGL Gazette.
  3. After completing your MBBS in Hungary, clear the FMGE or the upcoming NExT exam mandated by the NMC for getting registration.
  4. Complete the 1-year supervised internship again in India in an institution which permits you to get the training as per NMC regulations. Fulfil the registration requirements to apply for registration with the relevant State Medical Council.

A Constraint That No One Mentioned

The FMGL Gazette showed you need to pursue a medical programme (MBBS) in a foreign country that meets at least 54 months of education with 1 year of clinical rotation. Again, the internship in India is a separate regulation that seeks licensure and registration to practice in India.

What this means for you: plan for seven years

An MBBS in Hungary is a 6-year programme, but you should not view it as the entire medical journey to licensing and practice in India. You need to meet the NMC requirements, internship at the same medical school in Hungary, pass the FMGE/NExT, and complete supervised clinical training in India again, if you want to obtain a license to practise in India.

A Hungarian MBBS opens three pathways. Indian graduates can choose any of the three routes mentioned below.

Return to India to Build Your Medical Career

Upon completion of an MBBS in Hungary, Indian medical graduates can return to India. If they want to get a license and practice in India, they are required to pass the FMGE/upcoming NExT mandated by the NMC, along with the supervised clinical internship.

Practice In Hungary As a Doctor

An Indian medical (MBBS) graduate from a Hungarian medical school can practice in Hungary. But he or she needs to pass the Hungarian medical licensing exam, a Hungarian language proficiency test, and then he/she will be able to register with the Hungarian Medical Chamber for a license to practice there as a doctor.

Study or Practice Medicine in Other Countries

After completing your MBBS from one of the Hungarian medical schools, you can move to the European Union, the United Kingdom or the United States for further studies, but it does not provide you with automatic entry unless you pass their separate licensing exam, as well as registration requirements.
